Canelo Alvarez Signs Richest Boxing Contract Ever: $375 Million For 11 Fights

Боксер Альварес подписал крупнейший контракт в истории спорта

Boxer Canelo Alvarez Inks $365 Million Contract With Streaming Network DAZN, Richest Deal in the History of Sports

Currently Gennady Golovkin (38-1-1, 34 KOs) is one of the few marquee fighters who isn't currently aligned with a network or streaming platform. Álvarez has the potential to make even more money if DAZN hits certain subscription benchmarks.

The contract with DAZN is the largest contract ever for a sportsman, greater than the 13-year, $325 million agreement that New York Yankees hitter Giancarlo Stanton signed in 2014 to move from the Miami Marlins. That fight, like most of boxing's biggest, was shown on pay-per-view.

Alvarez, who's part of Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions, is the unified middleweight world champion.

Skipper promised fight fans will be able to buy fights "for a lot less expensive than they did before".

Mexican star Alvarez, who dethroned Gennady Golovkin in their gruelling rematch in Las Vegas last month, will fight 11 times as part of the deal, starting with December's super-middleweight bout in NY against Rocky Fielding.

Canada legalises cannabis for recreational use
A driver honked jubilantly at people lined up outside of downtown Montreal's new government-run cannabis store. Canadian Safe Cannabis Services held a legalization celebration on Wednesday with a barbecue and music.

A subscription in the USA will cost $9.99 under the five-year term with Golden Boy, which will also oversee another ten fights that will stream on DAZN in 2019.

Lionel Messi, who earned $111 million past year, is likely to be his main competition for the highest-earning athlete title, but reports indicate that Alvarez could have earned upwards of $120 million for 2018 by the time of his debut fight with DAZN.

De La Hoya concealed that Alvarez is "extremely happy" being the highest-paid athlete in the world. His 50-win career also boasts victories over Miguel Cotto, Amir Khan, Erislandy "The American Dream" Lara, Austin Trout, "Sugar" Shane Mosley, among many others.

Its early success across Europe and Asia was followed by launches in Canada (2017), Italy (2018) and the United States (2018), where DAZN announced blockbuster deals with Matchroom Boxing and Bellator MMA to deliver a stacked slate of fight sports content upon entry into the market.

This is an earth shattering deal when it comes to the business of sports and the landscape does appear to be changing with the old PPV model coming under threat from monthly services like DAZN, with the signing of Canelo a potential game changer.
