Buhari ‘condemns’ Kaduna violence that killed 55

Kaduna State Commissioner of Police Ahmad Abdur-Rahman on Saturday said that the Thursday killings in the Kasuwan Magani area followed a clash between two communities, which he did not name. "Residents are advised to comply by this directive", Kaduna state's governor, Nasir El-Rufai, said on Twitter.

Even though he said he was not certain about the number of those killed as a result of the mayhem as they are still trying to save the lives of people, but he commended the efforts of the security agencies in curtailing the crisis from escalating.

The governor said security agents have been directed to escort travellers passing through Kaduna to the outskirts of the town so as not to impeded the journey.

El-Rufai urges the citizens to "reject those who seek to incite and divide us", and called on all residents of Kaduna state to do their best to uphold peace.

The Kaduna State Government on Sunday said the imposition of a 24-hour curfew on Kaduna metropolis and environs was a preemptive measure to avert breakdown of law and order. "It is with immediate effect". The police have been authorised to do everything possible to restore calm.

Police said the special force deployed on Sunday will carry out stop and search patrols, raid suspected criminal hideouts and make arrests in areas that have been flashpoints or considered to be at risk of violence.

The statement quoted the IGP of charging "traditional rulers, religious leaders, public office holders, politicians, opinion leaders, parents and guardians to prevail on their subjects, supporters, children and wards to support the personnel of the Police Special Intervention Force in the discharge of their responsibilities, and propagate peace, demonstrate love, and tolerance to promote harmonious coexistence with their fellow citizens, irrespective of religious, ethnic inclinations and differences".
