Oscar strengthens into tropical storm; no threat to land

If the forecast holds, Oscar would be the 8th Atlantic hurricane of 2018.

Tropical Storm Oscar has been upgraded to a hurricane in the central Atlantic. Storms become hurricanes at 74 miles per hour. There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect. Then, Oscar is forecast to begin moving toward the north Monday night or Tuesday, and then head northwest away from the United States by Wednesday. "After that time, the low is forecast to turn westward and remain well to the north or northeast of the Lesser Antilles through early next week". It was moving west at 16 miles per hour with maximum sustained winds of 75 miles per hour. The peak of hurricane season is late August to early September, but early October also can see many hurricanes, AccuWeather noted.

A cyclone is a closed-circulation rotating storm that depending on its wind-speed intensity is classified, from weakest to strongest, as a tropical depression, tropical storm or hurricane.
