Staff members of those schools were asked to report to the same place.

"Pender County Schools is thankful everyone is safe and thanks local emergency services for its immediate response", the school tweeted.

Live footage shows numerous law enforcement agencies now at the school where the scene remains active.

Topsail High School, Topsail Middle School, and Topsail Elementary School were all put on lockdown.

There was a reported active shooter situation at a North Carolina high school, although officials now say they believe it was a false alarm caused by a malfunctioning water heater that made a noise that sounded like a gunshot.

Collins told Starnewsonline.com that popping noises heard at Topsail High School early Friday were from a "malfunctioning water heater".

The active shooter report came two days after 12 people were shot dead at a bar in California and nine months after 17 people were killed in Florida in one of the worst school massacres in USA history.

Topsail High School is located near the coast in Hampstead, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) north of Wilmington.

There were no injuries as of 7:03 a.m., Pender County Sheriff's Capt. James Rowell told WWAY. It has around 1,300 students enrolled.

Parents and students are gathering in the parking lot of a Lowes Foods.

Two Topsail High School students were arrested in May after allegedly bringing weapons onto campus, including one student who went to school armed with a semi-automatic rifle.
