One person was confirmed dead after multiple stabbing incident during rush hour in the Australian city of Melbourne, police said on Friday, as the city was placed on lockdown.
Police initially responded to a report of a auto on fire near the corner of Swanston Street about 4.20pm.
"As they got out of the vehicle they were quickly confronted by a male brandishing a knife and threatening them".
A second person suffered a head injury and has been taken to hospital. In video of the incident, the suspect approached the officers baring a large knife, making several attempts to stab them before an officer shot him in the chest.
"We are still trying to piece together whether the vehicle was lit, then he got out the auto or whether he got out of the auto and then the vehicle took flame", Victoria Police Commissioner Graham Ashton told reporters.
The bystander said that other people had run and hid.
Police are treating the incident as a terror attack.
A man with a shopping trolley is being heralded as a hero after putting himself in harm's way on Friday when he jumped in to help police take down a man who stabbed three people in Melbourne's CBD. Hundreds of people watched from behind barricades as police tried to apprehend the attacker.
Two others remain in hospital.
Victoria police declined to comment when contacted about Islamic State's claim.

"Police shot the male in the chest and he is now in a critical condition in hospital", Superintendent Clayton said, adding the officers are okay".
Mr Hair said two civilians became involved as well as two police, trying to stop the man from his attack.
Victoria Police are urging any witnesses to the incident to attend Melbourne West Police station to give a statement, or alternatively upload any images or videos from the incident to the Victoria Police facebook page. He was taken into custody in a critical condition.
Police will investigate a possible copy-cat motive.
According to Australian police, the attack is likely linked to terrorism, reported AP.
Police said that there was no known link to terrorism at this stage and that "we'll keep an open mind as to whether there's any link".
"Police were still in the vehicle and the attacker came out to attack the police".
The area has since been cordoned off by the bomb squad.
The attacks comes on the second day of the highly-publicised murder trial of James Gargasoulas, who allegedly drove through Bourke Street Mall on January 20 previous year, killing six people and injuring 27 others.
