Entire Town of Paradise, California ‘Pretty Much Destroyed’ in Camp Fire

Tens of thousands flee fast-moving Northern California fire

The fire forced the evacuation of patients from Paradise's main hospital to hospitals in Oroville and Chico.

Resident Shari Bernacett told the Associated Press that she "knocked on doors, yelled and screamed" to get mobile home residents to leave as fire consumed the hillside.

The Concow School sent its 60 students home, but many faculty members are anxious about their homes, said Golden Feather Union Elementary School District Superintendent Josh Peete.

In the midst of the chaos, officials said they could not provide figures on the number of wounded, but County Cal Fire Chief Darren Read said that at least two firefighters and multiple residents were injured.

Firefighters were able to stop the fire at the edge of the city, Cal Fire Cpt.

About 75,000 homes have been evacuated in Los Angeles and Ventura counties due to two fires in the region.

Not a single resident of Paradise - population 27,000 - could be seen anywhere in town Friday, the day after majority fled the burning Northern California community that may be lost forever.

"We've spoken to our pastors, and they're all safe, and as far as they know, so are their congregants", says Bret Allen, district superintendent for the Northern California and Nevada district.

The blaze that started Thursday morning east of Paradise and decimated the town also spread to the west.

Another fire northwest of Los Angeles has been swept southward toward the ocean by strong Santa Ana winds.

"It was like Dante's Inferno", said Paradise resident Eric, who was crying because he was unable to rescue his cat.

On Friday morning, gruesomely burned cars littered the side of the road.

"We had to drive through flames to make it out safely", she said.

Blome drove through the town with a man named Fred, crying, pointing out Sam's Liquor, Safeway, McDonald's, the church, the tire shop, the auto wash, apartments, her doctor's office, the bowling alley, a hotel, the veterinarian - all of which had gone up in flames.

Actress Alyssa Milano, one of Kardashian's neighbors in Calabasas, wrote on Twitter that she was also evacuated. Three others were found outside homes and one inside a home. It burned through 20,000 acres in less than 14 hours on Thursday. Herrera, who lives in Paradise with her 88-year-old husband, Lou, left a frantic voicemail at around 9:30 a.m. saying they needed to get out. "We're anxious sick. They do have a auto, but they both are older and can be confused at times". A fire had broken out in her yard, blocking the path to her vehicle.

Among the celebrity homes reportedly damaged - if not destroyed - was the home of Caitlyn Jenner, who posted an Instagram video reporting that she was in a safe house, but wasn't sure what has become of her home.
