Democrats ramp up efforts to sideline Nancy Pelosi, without an alternative

Pelosi, who was in NY on Tuesday, has been a major advocate for the battle against climate change and the protestors were hoping to pressure the presumptive next House speaker to push to put climate change on the agenda when the new Congress starts session in January. "We need to tell her that we've got her back in showing and pursuing the most progressive energy agenda that this country has ever seen", Ocasio-Cortez said of Pelosi, before high-fiving demonstrators.

"We welcome Nancy Pelosi's support, but words are not enough".

Seth Moulton of MA and Filemon Vela of Texas, contended that their private conversations revealed that Pelosi would soon learn that she lacked backing within the full House to be elected speaker next year - despite her confidence that she would lock down the necessary support. It's because the House Democratic caucus is increasingly viewed as an unfriendly environment for rising talent.

In supporting sit-ins in her own party's office, she demonstrates an understanding that constant community organizing is necessary along with legislative power.

Gottheimer noted several House leaders - including the Minority Whip, Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Md., and Majority Whip, Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., have both issued statements backing the Problem Solvers rules overhaul. He said Tuesday that he and other opponents are gathering signatures of Democrats who are committed to voting against Pelosi on the floor and would "like to" release it before the November 28 vote.

"The whole point of the letter is to accelerate this process so that it doesn't spill out onto the floor".

But it's unclear if those members might vote against her in the caucus yet vote for her on the House floor. "We want to make it clear before it comes to that".

"Until the current leader does not prevail on the floor of the House it's hard for a challenger to step up", said Representative Kurt Schrader, an Oregon Democrat and chairman of the Blue Dog Coalition's political arm.

"They asked me to join them, and I did".

Republicans have long cast Pelosi, who represents the liberal bastion of San Francisco, as a symbol of their disdain for Democrats.

It's orientation week, which means newly elected Democrats and Republicans are streaming into Washington flush with victory and, at least for the Democrats who will control the House, ready to take on President Donald Trump.

Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani said in May that the attempt to block the merger was directed by the White House, only for the White House to then claim he got it wrong, and that it was the Justice Department's call.

One thing that most of Pelosi's detractors don't talk about but which I have freely admitted for years was that she was a very powerful and effective speaker.

Pelosi will have to win a majority of support within the caucus to be nominated as speaker - something that is virtually assured - before the full House votes for a speaker in January, where the numbers will be critical. None of them won last Tuesday.
