The incident began last month, when the Blackpool-area police posted security images online that showed an apparent thief walking out of a store with armloads of unpaid-for beer.

He was caught on CCTV carrying the cans up an aisle, with Schwimmer's video response also showing him carrying beer in an American supermarket.

Friends star Schwimmer fuelled the publicity by posting a parody video on his own Twitter page, in which he reenacted CCTV footage shared by Blackpool Police. "As you can see, I was in NY", he wrote.

Blackpool police noted in a statement: "Following the appeal we posted looking for a man who resembles a well-known actor from the popular sitcom Friends; we now have an update".

He added the hashtag #itwasntme to the post.

A David Schwimmer lookalike suspected of theft has been arrested by the Lancashire police in Britain.

The London Metropolitan Police arrested a 36-year-old man in Southall on suspicion of theft of a coat, cellphone and wallet at a restaurant in Blackpool on September 20.

Lancashire police announced Monday's arrest on Twitter, thanking Schwimmer and the London Metropolitan Police for their support.

Internet commenters had way too much fun when cops mentioned the similarity between suspect and celebrity in October, and they made a slew of references to the Friends theme song.
