Smart, who is married and now 31, said that although the details of Jayme's ordeal have not been released, the fact that the girl "rescued herself" speaks volumes of her strength.
Jayme Closs age 13, went missing after her parents were found dead at their Wisconsin home. The FBI offered a cash reward for information on her whereabouts, and authorities urged hunters in the area to be on the lookout for clues.
Robert was there to greet Jayme when she returned home. "And we got to bring her home".
The home was surrounded by police when they were collecting evidence.
"Jeanne said, 'If you have a gun, get it ready. I can only go off of my own experiences", Smart said.
"I got my firearm out and stood by the door until the police arrived".
Investigators believe the man accused of kidnapping Jayme Closs killed her parents to clear the way for him to abduct her, a sheriff said on Saturday.
Gayle King spoke to Closs' relatives in Barron, Wisconsin, about how the teen is doing. When the dispatcher called back, a voicemail greeting indicated the phone belonged to Denise Closs, 46. Smith is Denise Closs' sister and Jayme's legal godmother.
Tips poured in. Some 2,000 volunteers - a number equivalent to two-thirds of Barron's population - searched for Jayme at one point. But there was still no sign of her, until Nutter, who was walking her dog, came across the teenager last Thursday. Nutter said Jayme did not have a coat or gloves.

"Jayme had a pretty good night sleep", she wrote, "It was great to know she was next to me all night, what a great feeling to have her home". "Don't ask me how I stayed so calm".
"This family has always had this incredible strength, they've always been there for each other long before this happened", she said.
"We believe Jayme was the target, and he (Patterson) was getting rid of possible barriers to taking her", Fitzgerald said.
Closs was wearing a zip-up hoodie, leggings and ill-fitting men's sneakers, the Kasinskas said. She teaches science to middle and high school students, and she remembered one middle schooler named Jake Patterson.
"I'm really proud of her for that, very proud of her", Naiberg said. But Jayme said he was 21, and Kasinskas realized the ages lined up, too. "I tingle because I have been praying for her since it happened, I don't know the family personally but it's just wonderful", said member, Larry Leff. "He wasn't super active in student body life. I wouldn't say the most popular kid, but he had friends".

"Jennifer babysat for her all the time in her daycare that she ran".
Minutes later, the police radio crackled: Patterson had been apprehended. "We realized he was in the neighborhood coming back for her".
